In this advice we share several draft shop layouts to provide inspiration and provocation for your own shop layout.

The idea of this sketch is to outline one idea of what a blank retail space could be developed into - or what a traditional newsagency space could be evolved into. I have developed it based on a clean slate in terms of what is sold and where products are placed.
This is an outline for a business without lotteries.
While flat on paper the space looks cluttered, I envisage all floor units to be no more then mid chest height, so the sight lines to products on the walls are good.
I can imagine the counter would present challenges for plenty. I see this being a simple table, easily accessible from both sides. De-cluttered. But a work station from where any work in the business day to day is done.
This shop has to look warm, welcoming, shopable and natural. Professional but not corporate. Full but not cluttered.
The idea of the sketch is to help you think about your business, where products are placed and why.
Newsagencies historically were set and forget businesses. Retail today does not abide this approach. Change is vital. Hence, the need for a layout and a fit that facilitates easy and regular change.
We have a series of designs to share. We hope they provide stimulation as you plan for shop floor changes.
#2

This shop layout is for a narrower shop, more likely to be in a high street situation, where space is more limited.
I envisage a shop with mood lighting, some parts bright so colours pop while others have featur d lights that focus on what is immediately below - like with the gift tables.
The only fixed unit is the counter. I see the rest around the outside as slat wall with appropriate fixtures clipped in. Yes, for magazines and cards too. On the floor you would have everyday fixtures.
#3

This is a bare-bones shop layout offering places for the basics with the rest of the space being used for whatever is appropriate to the business.
The fixtures would be everyday and free standing.
The lighting would be less hot, more muted, warm ... but with feature spots on feature product / categories on the walls.
This suggested layout is for a business that would most likely not identify as a Newsagency.
There is room in corners or nooks for low margin lines. However, that space allocation would need to be kept to a minimum, leaving max space for max GP contribution.
