Here are three things we guarantee will increase card sales:
- Promote at the counter. Always have a counter pitch. Change it weekly. Be thoughtful in product selection. See photos of examples further on in this doc. Get this right and you could sell 2, 3, 4 or more cards every day, purchased on impulse. Cards at the counter need to be placed so as people cannot miss them. Changing the card mix weekly is vital. Consider putting a sign with the pitch: THIS WEEK'S STAFF PICKS
- Promote online. Promote a card every couple of days on social media - a card people would not readily consider buying - like a new home card or a thank you coach card.
- Promote off location. Have one or more card offers, on spinners or small format stands, located away from the card department, pitching to shoppers who are not destination card shoppers. Ideal off-location placements include at the door for people to see as they leave, with newspapers, with magazines, in the stationery department or with plush. The objective is to leverage other destination traffic into a card purchase as well.
While there are plenty of other actions you can take to increase card sales, as outlined in our broader card category advice sheet, these three points are urgent and timely.
Of the three listed above, the counter placement is absolutely the most important. Think of it this way – you can help people save shopping time with the ideal card placed there for them. This is why we say take care with product selection.
The success of counter placement of cards is 100% dependent on your card choices.
