Now, on the pitch from ALNA:
You may have seen the ALNA Windcave EFTPOS offer promoted recently, with its flat 5.75 cent eftpos fee. Flat fees sound appealing, so compared it properly against the newsXpress Tyro offer. The results are worth two minutes of your time.
On term: the ALNA offer is a 3 year commitment whereas with the newsXpress there is no such commitment.
On credit cards, there is nothing between the two offers. Both price Visa and Mastercard at cost plus a 0.16% margin. Identical.
The difference is debit, and debit is most of what goes through a newsagency terminal. A flat fee favours big baskets. On a $50 sale, 5.75 cents is cheap. On a $5 lottery sale, 5.75 cents is over 1% of the transaction, which is credit card pricing for a debit tap. Our shops are small-basket businesses. Most newsagencies run an average sale between $5 and $20, and at those values the percentage-based Tyro pricing wins.
Here is a worked example. A shop putting $50,000 a month through the terminal at a $10 average sale pays roughly $273 a month on the newsXpress Tyro offer against roughly $296 to $314 on the Windcave offer, depending on whether the free first-year terminal still applies. At a $5 average sale the gap grows to more than $1,400 a year. The lower your average sale, the more the flat fee costs you. These figures use published and indicative rates, and your own mix will move them, which is why we are happy to run your actual numbers.
For the record: newsXpress takes no margin from EFTPOS transactions. We have been public about this: the rate Tyro offers is the rate you pay, with nothing clipped on the way through. And Tyro is an Australian business, which matters to us, and probably you.
The offer itself: 0.16% across Visa, Mastercard, eftpos, Amex and UnionPay, 0% on eftposcash out, Tap & Save least cost routing enabled, and terminal rental of $17.27 ex GST per month.
If you would like us to compare your current merchant statement against this offer, send it through. It takes us a day and costs you nothing.
