This is updated advice as at August 2026.
Every newsXpress store should stock Ty products. Sales data from our network and other stockists shows they sell in any location.
Know your customer
The typical collector is a girl aged 8 to 15, but older girls, boys and adults collect too. A typical collector buys at least 40 Boos over about two years.
Ty products are a good shut-up toy that adults shopping with a kid will happily grab.
Your competitive advantages
- Indie focussed. No majors.
- The newsXpress collector card.
- Better payment terms and a lower cost of goods than other newsagents and toy shops.
What you must do
- Keep the Ty stand full. A stand at 50% or less drives sales down. Hold floor stock to top it up.
- Do not cover the Ty logo. It attracts shoppers.
- Arrange by character and keep them together.
- Strip and rebuild the stand fortnightly.
- Place clips in front of their partner products.
- Put the stand near the entrance.
- Keep several of every new Boo at the counter for a week or two.
- Do a big window display once a quarter.
- Post about a Boo character on your business Facebook page at least weekly.
- Run the collector card and keep cards on the stand.
Train staff
Everyone in the business, owners included, should know what Boos are, who buys them and what each character means. The more your team talks about them on the shop floor, the more you sell.
Stay the course
If Ty products aren’t performing, the problem is often the in-store location. Keep adjusting and talk to us; we’ll help you to get it right. Ignore competitors and focus on being the best.
Getting started
Beanie Boos are supplied through central billing. The supplier ships and invoices us, we pay them and sweep from your account on favourable terms. Questions: help@newsxpress.com.au
How to run a simple Ty party
A party attracts shoppers who would not normally visit. This format is easy to run and rests on one fact: Ty shoppers mainly want to buy Ty and meet other Ty lovers. We tested it at a corporate store in a suburban strip with no major retailer nearby, and it worked well.
Planning (start two weeks out)
- Stock up. Carry as many regulars as you can, plus Medium and Large sizes; the party is a chance to sell these. Have plenty of collector cards and adoption certificates.
- Set your offers. We suggest 25% off for anyone who colours in a Boo drawing (download from our website), buy two get one free on Ty product, an hourly draw for a free Boo and an end-of-day draw for a Medium or Large. Put a sign up in-store; email help@newsxpress.com.au for an example.
- Run it on a Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
- Create a Facebook event and boost it to at least a 40km radius. People will drive. Run more boosted posts in the final week.
- Do not cap attendance. The goal is maximum attendance and sales.
Dress the shop
- A Ty display near the front and a stand out the front of the shop.
- A bowl of clips at the counter.
- A kids' table with colouring sheets and pencils.
- Bite-size lollies, plus Boo-eyes cupcakes from a local bakery. About 50 is enough.
- Balloons for the kids and discount vouchers to bring shoppers back later.
On the day
- Greet shoppers at the door and hand out colouring sheets.
- Keep the counter moving so non-Boo shoppers are served quickly.
- Take photos for social media.
- Be generous with clips, deals and vouchers. It builds your name among collectors.
- Listen to the stories people tell you.
- Owners, be on the floor. Dads are big Boo shoppers.
Run a party like this at least once a year.
