It can be frustrating when a local retailer copies you, bringing in the same or similar product to what you have found. newsXpress members often share their frustration when this happens.
The thing is, it does happen, nearby retailers do and will copy innovation you bring to your shop. While we understand frustration, it does not help you. The only way to confront people copying you is for you to play in a way that is difficult to copy.
Here are some ways you can differentiate products in your business beyond what a local competitor could do:
- Fresh product. This is the best way to differentiate – through products competitors do not have.
- Demonstrate. Showing how something is used through a display or education can make you a more valuable destination.
- Sample. Where possible, let people sample your offers.
- Events. Host events around a range you bring in that you think a local competitor may copy you on. Introduce the new product expecting the competition.
- Bundle. Offer a hamper or a bundle that you have made for yourselves. It wold be a bold local competitor that copies something as specific as this.
- Reward. A consistent whole of business discount voucher program will do more to bind people to your shop that a single range that a local competitor can copy.
People will copy you. This is especially true in regional and rural locations. They have the same challenges as you, the same stressors, the same customers.
So, don’t be surprised. In fact, if you expect it and introduce products expecting it you are more likely to insulate yourself from any such competition.
