Meeting your obligations under the federal legislation on employee pay and management is straightforward.
- Pay according to the award. The award for a typical newsXpress business is the Retail Industry Modern Award. Paying according to the award relies on employees being classified correctly. Classifications are part of the Modern Award.
- Always, on the books. Never pay an employee off the books, in cash or some other way. The only way to pay employees is on the books with full associated obligations such as Superannuation and workers compensation covered.
- Always pay on time.
- Provide a pay slip for every pay period. The pay slip can be printed or emailed. You must be able to reprint or re-email a pay slip on demand. The pay slip must document the gross pay, deductions and net pay. Click here to access a Fair Work suggested pay slip.
- Have a roster an a timesheet. Document the house employees are expected to work each week. This can double as a timesheet, with actual hours worked recorded.
- Do not ask for unpaid overtime. Each hour worked must be paid for, based on the employee timesheet.
- Meet annual leave requirements. Keep a record of leave entitlements as they accrue. This is best done using payroll software. It enables easy reporting to employees of accrued leave and records their use of leave.
- Meet superannuation requirements. Pay superannuation on time, to the required amount and into the fund nominated by employees.
- Meet your uniform obligations. This means paying for the care of uniforms you provide. The Award notes a cost for permanent and casual employees. You can avoid this is you pay above the award and have employee agreement that this is, in part, for cleaning.
