It is essential that your business have a clearly stated and consistently followed respect policy. This policy should outline what you expect of all who work in the business in terms of respect.
Having a policy could be helpful in the event of a situation that may challenge the business as it can provide authorities something to which you can point and note the position of the business.
A policy alone is not enough. It is important this is visible to all employees, displayed in a place they all will see in the business and discussed at team meetings. It is important that the leadership of the business live this, lead by example.
We are in an era when people have access to tools and platforms from which they can easily complain. The best position for a business is to not be in a position where a complaint can be made. Hence, our suggested respect policy:
Our respect policy
What happens in this business can impact on all who work here, people who shop here and on all who work in newsXpress businesses around the country.
How you behave has an impact. Respect is critical.
Please…
- Treat all co-workers and customers with respect.
- Do not deliberately touch customers or co-workers.
- Do not deliberately make comments to customers or co-workers that could be taken as rude or offensive.
- Do not deliberately engage in unwanted, humiliating, embarrassing or demeaning behavior towards any customer or co-worker.
- Do not talk about customers or co-workers behind their back.
- At all times, act as if everything you say and do can be seen publicly.
While we appreciate that retail can be challenging, and some customers can be rude and offensive, it does not help matching rudeness with rudeness from or flirtations with flirtations.
Your safety and the safety of our customers is important.
Your attention to these matters will be appreciate by the business and the newsXpress community nationally.
