School holidays present an excellent opportunity to attract shoppers who might not usually visit the business. The best way to do this is through events and activities in-store, which you promote in advance on Facebook and elsewhere.
Here is a list of activities we suggest, in no particular order.
- Host a brand Party. This is easy to run. We have excellent advice on how to do it. We think there are opportunities to do between four and six a year.
- Grandparents day. Build a day of activities and deals for grandparents and their young charges for the day.
- Teenagers learn to write a card day. Offer education, some relevant fun and deals on buying cards. Try and get them sold on the idea of writing and giving cards.
- Retro games party. Promote fun with marbles, whoopee cushions, slinks, chess, dominoes, snakes and ladders and more.
- Monopoly madness. Promote your monopoly games and have one out for people to play. Create a power version where you play for 30 minutes and the person with the most cash wins.
- Pusheen party. because Pusheen fans love a good party.
- A Local Archi prize. This is a local take on the Archibald prize. Get kids to paint someone local. You hang the entries and award a winner. All to coincide with holidays so families come in to see the entries and vote if you decide to have a vote for the winner.
- Superhero party. With pops, plush, customer (Rubies) and other products that are super hero themed you can leverage interest in these products by having a party.
- Open mic buskers day. Get kids in to entertain customers on a day or days. The kids get an audience, you are shown as fostering local talent and families get to be proud at their young performers.
- Old timers talk local. If you are in a regional or rural area with long-term old timers. See if they would like to tell interesting local stories to kids. This idea plays into you connecting with the local community in that could be a deeply engaging and local way.
Consider this list to be a shopping list of sorts. Choose activities that work for you. However, be sure to play outside what is usual for your business if you want to achieve a result beyond what is usual.
