Instagram is an excellent platform for helping attract people to your business.
The most valuable people who follow your Instagram account are those who you naturally rather than those you ask to follow you.
Set up your account right. Describe your business. Include contact details. While you can link to Facebook, we suggest you don't. Use Instagram to reach a different audience.
Choose an Instagram account page that makes sense, that reflects your business name or close to.
Decide on your Instagram personality. This is important as it is that personality that chooses the photos and writes the posts. That personality can be someone different to how you are everyday. The personality is your brand.
You get followers with terrific photos and smart use of hashtags.
Terrific photos. These are photos that are fun, tell a story, evoke a heartfelt emotion, cause people to want to share with others and do not overtly set out to sell. They can be fun, naughty, sweet. They cannot be bland, hard to understand or meaningless.
Smart use of hashtags. This is about using hashtags that are popular. You can easily work this out by typing a hashtag and seeing how many have used it. People search by hashtag.
The text you use for a photo should be simple, crisp with hashtags the focus. Use at least three hashtags. Five max. Your text could be all hashtags. If a hashtag has multiple words, capitalise each like this #WeLoveWinter
You don't always have to post abut the business. Post about the area where you are located, your people.
You can run Instagram competitions too. These can be most valuable. See our facebook competition advice.
Tag your business location in posts, so people can easily find you.
Don't post the same thing over and over. Do it once, move on.
Take note of engagement to get a feel for the best time to post for your business. Our experience is mid morning and early through late evening.
If it all feels a bit hard, start ... the very best thing you can do here is to start.
