While the purpose of January 26 has become a matter of debate, the public holiday is what it is. Our advice is that you find ways to celebrate being Australian, being in Australia and all things Australian. Here is a list of ideas from which you can choose appropriate to your situation or to stimulate you to think of ideas of your own.
- Promote Aussie. Ensure everything you sell that is made in Australia is featured in a front of store display. Creating this could guide you to source more local product.
- Sing the anthem. Anyone singing the national anthem in-store gets a discount. Set date and time parameters for this to protect the retail space and maximise opportunity for interest.
- Pop-up choir anthem sing. Ask a local singing teacher to host a pop-up choir to sing the national anthem and a couple of Aussie songs at a specific time in-store.
- Window story. Invite a local community group – scouts, guides, a church group or similar – to create a window display about being Australian.
- Local history. Ask the local historical society for ideas, facts and stories that you can share in-store or on social media.
- Play Aussie music in-store.
- The Yarts. If you have the space and time opportunity, setup a showcase where local singers, comedians and poets can strut their stuff in-store, celebrating local Aussie talent.
- Invite older local residents to tell their favourite first-person being Australian story.
- Close to the day, have a traditional Aussie BBQ in-store or out the front.
- Tell your Australian story. Share your story about being Australian on your Facebook page. One of the most powerful voices pitching your business is you. Power comes from your stories.
No matter what you do to connect with Australia Day, have fun and bring your community along with you.
