Whereas in the past, the local newspaper was the best place to advertise small retail businesses, especially those in the country, today Facebook presents the most valuable and cost effective option.
Here is our advice on using Facebook to advertise your business.
- Remember, people use Facebook to be entertained. Whenever possible, keep it simple, and fun.
- Focus on a single product per post. Choose the photo or photos carefully - see our separate advice on photos.
- Boost a post for a day only, to start with.
- Spend between $2 and $5 per boost.
- Add more $$ and days to a post if it is working well.
- Run a boosted post at least every second day. Ideally, to kick things off, do one every day for two weeks with a $2 a day spend. The activity flowing from this will guide you as to what works best for you.
- Talk about what you love or what other people love rather than come and buy this product from us.
- Keep track of your spending, do not go overboard, stick to a budget. We suggest you set a monthly marketing budget. As a guide, we suggest between .5% and 1% of non agency product revenue.
- When boosting a post sometimes use a new audience in a town a short distance from your town location.
- On some posts, use special interests, but not always.
The measure of success of advertising is incremental business, business you would not have achieved had you not advertised. While clicks, likes, shares and page likes are good, unless you achieve a financial return you will not be able to sustain advertising.
