First up, consider why people might buy jigsaws for themselves or others as a gift:
- For brain exercise.
- No battery required relaxation.
- For something to do with friends.
- Relaxation.
- Spatial training.
- Motor skills training.
- Because of the image on a jigsaw, such as Paris, horses, unicorns. People who have never done and will never do a jigsaw can love a jigsaw because of the image.
- As a challenge - to get it done.
- As a group exercise at a party.
- As group fun at a retirement village or a nursing home.
- As entertainment for grey nomads.
Here are our tips for low-cost / no-cost promotion:
- Talk about jigsaws and different reasons for purchase on social media.
- Talk about the ones you like and why you like them.
- Post photos of a theme – i.e all New York themed jigsaws you have, or all horse themed.
- Share photos of jigsaws completed by customers.
- Share videos from Ravensberger showing how they are made and why they are special.
- Be seen as the expert through this content.
- Explain the value of doing jigsaws for brain health.
- Create a stunning window display showing you as having more jigsaws that any retailer within 50km.
- Put a table on the shop floor with chairs and open a jigsaw for customers to complete. This is the most important tip.
- Host a jigsaw party or event. Here are some event name suggestions to get you thinking:
- Jigsaw bubbles party. Sparkling wine can make jigsaws fun.
- Beer and jigsaws, for blokes. Maybe as a fundraiser for men's Shed.
- The under 12 jigsaw party. Jigsaw fun for kids.
- The cute pets jigsaw party. Let's make a jigsaw of a cute pet. A good opportunity to sell other pet products.
- Summer relax jigsaw party. Friends, refreshments and a calming jigsaw.
- Retiring jigsaws. Make the jigsaw, have a grew and a chat.
- Train staff on reasons people buy jigsaws (see the above list).
- Have a jigsaw of the week at the counter.
- Place jigsaws so people can see the front easily.
- Place jigsaws next to Monopoly and games.
- Place a secondary display of jigsaws near crossword magazines.
- Train staff to personally help anyone looking at jigsaws. People want information, they want to understand the value of the purchase.
- Offer a mobile jigsaw roadshow to local retirement villages and nursing homes. Take the product to them.
- Look for a local jigsaw group. While not everywhere, they do exist. People get together to talk and complete a jigsaw. If you find a group, engage and see how you can help.
- Do not discount except at rare and important times.
Jigsaws are not something to put on the shelf and wait for sales. You need to work with the category inside and outside the store … outside the store especially.
The more you work the more the reward.
